I am really excited about this trip. I’m also very prejudiced, not just because Norway has been determined to be the happiest country in the world, but because my grandfather, Benny Langvik, came from Fredrikstad, Norway in the late 1800s. He was born in a little red house at the end of a long, little fjord, or Langvik. I first set foot in Fredrikstad in 1965, when I spent the summer in Saltnes and Oslo with relatives, especially with cousin Inge and her 2 children, Hans-Jørgen and Claus. It was the best summer of my life with its simplicity and Inge’s intellectual tenacity juxtaposed against life on the sea.

We will arrive in Bergen, the quaint coast town in southwestern Norway. Here you can unwind from the flight, taste fresh fish from the day’s catch, delicious strawberries dripping juices onto your chin, and some Norwegian sweets – maybe some mouthwatering waffles with homemade jam.

We will stay in Bergen 2 nights, long enough to stretch our legs, relax, walk among the colorful houses, and attend a noontime concert at the Grieg museum.

From Bergen, we'll take an all-day excursion to the Sognefjord, which will also include traveling on the Flam and Bergen railroads. We ill introduce you to Scandinavia’s oldest resource, molding people’s livelihood and lifestyle: water. Water is everywhere in this part of the world and provides the basis for some industries: fishing, power and tourism.

In the Lofoten islands, we can enjoy music, boating and fishing, if you’d like. We could even be greeted by Northern Lights some evenings. The Lofoten Chamber Music Festival is Norway’s most famous summer classical event; in 2018 most of the festival will be a celebration of piano music. The program hasn’t been made public yet so I do not yet who will play what, but I am sure it will be a wonderful music experience.

After staying on the islands for 4 full days, we will amble to Oslo, Norway’s capital, where a show piece of Norway’s new wealth is shown in the new opera building. In Oslo, we can experience the urban life of the world’s happiest nation. We will also visit some fine cultural landmarks: the Edvard Munch (Norway’s most famous artist) museum and Vigeland Park.  We will also take a daytrip to Fredrikstad, my cousin Trond’s hometown and my Norwegian origins.

Coming along on this venture is Trond Langvik, resident of Fredrikstad, Norway. I met my cousin Trond Langvik in 2004; he wasn’t around in 1965. He is the kind of guy you can bond with instantly. Trond’s job as a communication specialist in the Fredrikstad community and his friendly personality will serve him very well as our guide and co-host.
