Art History in Provence/Cote d'Azure
November 4-14, 2018
Vieux Nice, Nice
If you’ve ever wanted to suffer from sensory overload from the great artists in Provence, here’s your chance! The artists include Cezanne, Van Gogh, Renoir, Chagall, Matisse, and Picasso. These artists all lived and worked in this lovely region of southern France; many of their homes, studios, and works are still available for us to visit so that we can better appreciate their works, lives, and legacies. Sevan Melikyan will lead us in the footsteps of these artists as he shows us and talks to us about the individual artists, their histories and how they connect to one another.
And we can’t forget the French food!
October 20-27, 2018
Come with us on a seven-day food, music and cultural tour to the castle complex of Tabiano, outside of Parma and near Salsomaggiore Terme, Italy. We might even feel as if we have stepped back in time while staying in the small village, although all modern conveniences are present, Tabiano could make you believe that you time-machined back to the 11th century!
Parma is in the region of Reggio Emilia, the food capital of Italy— it’s where the best food of Italy originates—think parmigiana cheese, Parma ham, Lambrusco and balsamic, the famous product of nearby Modena; it’s also the birthplace of conductor Toscanini, and the home of the Teatro Reggio, a beautiful opera house.

Painting the 'Gunks
Growing up, our house was just south of the Mohonk Mountain House. From our dining room window, we had a perfect view of the stone fire tower on the mountain, and it glistened in the sunset. On Sundays during the spring and summer, my father would often take us for a Sunday drive and we would end up at Mohonk, walking through the beautiful gardens. Mohonk was my first taste of Europe; in the 1950’s it was very sophisticated, genteel and otherworldly, or so it seemed to a little girl from the New York State countryside.
And now, years later, I am very happy to bring you on a trip here, to discover the beauty of the Mohonk of the early 21st century. Join Tim Smith, a landscape painter now based in New Paltz, NY, as he guides your plein air painting in the footsteps of revered masters of the Hudson River School of Landscape Painting, focusing on Frederic Church and Thomas Cole. Painting locations will include Mohonk Mountain Resort and the Wallkill River Valley, where demonstrations of specific aspects of painting plein air and individual instruction will take place.
