Jack Zipes brings mini-college courses to the Armchair Journeys curriculum.  We heartily welcome him back for this, his third series with us, and hope many of you, seasoned and newbies,

will join.

Jack will explore topsy-turvy twists on traditional, classical fairy tales – some hilarious, weird, twisted and/or quirky.  The newer tales are found in anthologies by mostly unknown authors, but you may be surprised by the familiarity of a couple!  

The sessions will begin on Monday, January 31 at 11 am, eastern and will continue each Monday until March 14.  Each session will last approximately 1.5 hours.

  • March 14 --  Stephen Sondheim,  Into the Woods and Soman Chainani, Beasts and Beauty: Dangerous Tales (2021)

Jack writes:

As we all know the fairy tales of Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm have been regarded in English-language countries as “classical” fairy tales ever since they originated in the 17th and 19th centuries. Many of Perrault’s tales, which appeared first in 1697. were followed by  the Grimms’ tales during the 19th century. Distinct changes could be seen between the French and German tales. In addition, individual tales (not in anthologies)  such as “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Bluebeard,” etc. have been re-created and re-published thousands of different times throughout the world as picture books, postcards, stamps, films, plays, poems, operas up to the present day.

 

What is NOT commonly known is that these classical tales have also appeared in magazines, journals, and unusual anthologies with a different twist that reveal a great deal about diverse ideologies, aesthetics, and customs in the civilizing of particular cultures. The current program includes seven anthologies focused on the tales of Perrault and the brothers Grimm published in Great Britain and the United States from 1880 to 2022.  All the classical fairy tales and some others have been translated into English, and each participant will select one tale from the anthology and discuss the changes that have been made from the original classical tales and why the change is significant. In some cases, there may also be illustrations to study.

 

The important questions for each participant are:

  1. Why did you choose this tale

  2. What does it mean to you?

  3. Have the changes embellished or damaged the original tale?

  4. What significance did it have it its own time and why? What

       significance does  it have now?

The cost of this 7-part series is $125.  PDFs of most books will be provided, except for Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, Soman Chainani, Beasts and Beauty:  Dangerous Tales, and  the dvd of Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

Growing up in a family with supportive parents and three accomplished older siblings in the Hudson River Valley, New York, meant that Joan had a lot to live up to. However, she was always encouraged to do her best in whichever path(s) she chose.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in German literature and afterward working in Hamburg, Germany for one year, Joan realized her great joy of traveling. Bringing together Joan’s life passions, including her lifelong love for music, her appreciation of art, and her fondness of Italy, she began Artful Journeys in 2009, when it was then known by the rather wordy moniker of Tuscany: A Journey For The Senses. Joan also has owned a bookkeeping business for architects and various small professional firms in New England since 1993, in which she is still active.
