Making memorable vacation photos is the goal of many travelers. They last longer than most souvenirs, are great to share with friends and family, and bring back happy memories when you come across them in a photo album many years later. Let’s face it, travel and photography go together like a chilled rosé and a salade Niçoise on a warm summer’s day in Provence.
Unfortunately, during this time of sheltering-in-place, our ability to travel is on hold, but that does not mean that your camera should be collecting dust with your suitcase. This is a great time to improve your photography, so when the world opens for travel, you will be ready to create beautiful travel photographs worth hanging on your walls.
Please join photographer Neeley Drown as she shares some basic camera and composition techniques, as well as expert tips on capturing activity in the local markets, famous sites, landscapes, the delicious food and wine, and the people you meet. She will also give you suggestions on what you can do right now at home to practice and also discuss the best gear to take on a trip and what to leave at home.
Neeley has recently returned from a four-year-long trip. During that time, she and her husband made photographs and taught photography workshops as they slowly traveled from California, across Mexico, around Europe, Sri Lanka, Australia, and more. Now that they have settled back in California, they are slowly working on a blog featuring their adventures and photographs to share with their family and friends. You can see some of their photos at https://2ontherun.com. You can see Neeley’s photography at https://www.neeleydrown.com.

Neeley’s skills and experience in creating fine art, street, and travel photography translate well to personal and professional portraiture, travel, and event photography. She is a professor of photography at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. Neeley also owns her own photographic workshop company (https://www.neeleydrown.com) where she develops and teaches workshops both near her home in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Europe. For Neeley, teaching and inspiring others to make beautiful photographs is as much a passion as making her own art.
Owner, Host, & Director
Years ago, it was suggested to Joan that she might offer an art program, and she jumped at the chance of a lifetime. Bringing together all of her life's passions, the development and administration of Artful Journeys is an exhilarating process for Joan.
Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was very difficult, especially succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
