In Tuscany & San Donato Val di Comino
September 3-12, 2019
Trip Status: CLOSED

Tour Cost: $3550
Activity Level: Moderate

Paint with American Society of Marine Artists “Fellow” and ARC “Living Master” Sergio Roffo in the beautiful countryside of Tuscany for 4 full days while staying in a lovely villa. Then travel to Sergio’s hometown village of San Donato Val di Comino on the Abruzzi mountainside and experience the medieval architecture and landscape replete with olive groves.

In this workshop, Sergio will focus on the techniques and principles of plein Air oil landscape painting. The first day we will get acquainted with each other and the surrounding countryside to get a feel for and visually study the area.

On the next Sergio will start by discussing the aesthetic issues and techniques of art as he demonstrates and completes a plein air field study, encouraging fellow artists to observe. You can learn so much by observing and memorizing.  While he strongly encourages the class to observe his demonstrations, students will have the option to paint alongside Sergio during the week. After the demonstrations, students will receive individual instruction and personal encouragement while completing their painting alla prima, or in one sitting.

The objective of this Italian workshop is to sensitize the class to principal aspects of outdoor painting, including....

  • Learning how to see and simplify nature’s details.

  • Understanding the interplay of light and shadow.

  • Knowing how to mix the right colors.

  • Eliminate the fear of outdoor painting.

  • ...and simply enjoying the great food and fine wines that Italy offers.

Accommodations are at “Dimora di Coloni” near Certaldo in Tuscany and Hotel La Grotte in San Donato in Val di Comino, Sergio’s birthplace!

This workshop is open to oil painters of all levels.

Joan Hill
Owner, Host, & Director

Years ago, it was suggested to Joan that she might offer an art program, and she jumped at the chance of a lifetime. Bringing together all of her life's passions, the development and administration of Artful Journeys is an exhilarating process for Joan.

Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was very difficult, especially succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
