Join Eli Cedrone’s fifth workshop with Artful Journeys LLC and the third in Cascais. Eli’s workshops are designed to be fun, stimulating and stress-free experiences, for beginners to advanced students alike. Everything has been carefully organized so all you have to do is paint and enjoy the wonderful experience of being in Cascais, Portugal. Come experience the sharpness of color, decorative tiles everywhere, and the warm sun and people of Portugal.

One of Eli's workshops in Portugal

  • Cascais - a resort town on the Atlantic, steeped in history and offering some of the most exquisite natural and architectural sites in the country. It is a place of magic, myths, and mystery.

  • Secret places that our young, handsome guide Frederico knows.

  • The golden, rugged coastline with sandy beaches, sometimes.

  • Sophisticated, gastronomical delights in the restaurants of Cascais

  • Five days of painting workshops, rain or shine

Once again, we will stay at the Albatroz Hotel, a luxury hotel which sits near the crashing ocean.  The newly renovated Albatroz Hotel is a place of true glamour that rises above the ocean.  Each room is unique and individually decorated in their own, unique style, offering guests totally modern up-to-date comfort.

There will be plenty of painting time, personal instruction, and group critiques to promote your progress.  Participants are welcome to bring images of past work for discussion.  We’ll meet at designated locations with a break for lunch. In case of inclement weather, we will work inside. We will end the week with a farewell dinner. A detailed itinerary will be furnished upon registration.

This year we will again be very fortunate to have with us during the workshop Frederico Paradela de Abreu, known in the guide trade as amigo Fred, whom we met as a guide in 2017 and then adopted him as our own. He posed for Eli our last afternoon, after which he serenaded us on the piano. Frederico will show us some spectacular painting spots, be our liaison in Cascais and guide us to some wonderful spots.

Eli Cedrone

"I've always been influenced by the power of images to express ideas and emotions. Painting is a process of discovery and decision making where disparate elements pull together until the image is clearly expressed."

Eli Cedrone has spent her lifetime creating. A graduate of the School of Art & Design in Boston, she studied art in Italy and at the School of the MFA, Boston. Her professional career began as an art director at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, Bermuda, followed by work as an illustrator and mixed-media artist in Laguna Beach, CA. Her work has been exhibited nationwide and she is a popular workshop instructor in the Alla Prima method. Contemporary Realism would best describe her style. Two powerful influences have been the Spanish impressionist, Joaquin Sorolla and Richard Diebenkorn. Others include Nicolai Fechin, Anders Zorn, John Singer Sargent.

Frederico Paradela de Abreu

Known in the guide trade as amigo Fred, we met Frederico as a guide in 2017 and then adopted him as our own. Frederico will show us some spectacular painting spots, be our liaison in Cascais and guide us to some wonderful spots.

Joan Hill
Owner, Host, & Director

Years ago, it was suggested to Joan that she might offer an art program, and she jumped at the chance of a lifetime. Bringing together all of her life's passions, the development and administration of Artful Journeys is an exhilarating process for Joan.

Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was very difficult, especially succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
