Bach in Weimar
with Miguel Rodé
Artful Journeys is very happy to be once again collaborating with Miguel Rodé of The Cantata Trail. We’ll be presenting to fellow Bachians a virtual meeting series about Bach's time in Weimar from 1708 to 1717, before his posts in Koethen and Leipzig. We'll learn about his work in Weimar; his employers; the different posts he held during his tenure, and his own musical evolution while there.
Miguel will lead in-depth discussions about some of the cantatas Bach wrote while in Weimar:
-
Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV 182
-
Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12
-
Christen, ätzet diesen Tag, BWV 63
-
Erschallet, ihr Lieder, erklinget, ihr Saiten!, BWV 172
-
Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange?, BWV 155
-
Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21
-
Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (I), BWV 61
At each session we'll discuss the occasion for each piece, review its text, and conduct high-level musical analysis to enable a deeper appreciation of Bach's musical language. We’ll listen to cantatas in their entirety during each presentation. Materials will be provided online via The Cantata Trail website: librettos, scores, program notes and links to recommended recordings. These will be posted a few days before each session, so you can review in advance and actively participate in the discussions!
It might be wise to bring a snack with you: each session will last about 2 hours, which will give you ample information to explore further on your own or with friends. We also recommend that you have a Spotify subscription (free tier works if you can live with the occasional commercial break!) or access to YouTube on your computer to listen to the full pieces before and after the sessions.
Here’s a teaser: the gorgeous “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen”, BWV 12, performed by Rudolf Lutz and his forces: https://youtu.be/xG8DkFA3QyE?si=0xCcD2nE1Hh4NVXP
YOUR HOSTS

Miguel Rodé
Facilitator
Miguel Rodé was born and raised in Montevideo, Uruguay and moved to the US in 2002 as part of his career in Information Technology. He currently lives in Seattle, WA.
A life-long music lover, over the years Miguel developed a special fascination with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and in particular with his cantatas and other vocal works. During the Covid pandemic, Miguel initiated a series of virtual meetings called "The Cantata Trail" with the intent of sharing this incredibly rich musical universe with some close friends. In addition to hosting his own virtual meeting series, Miguel has facilitated online and in-person workshops for Artful Journeys, the Whidbey Island Music Festival, and the Seattle Bach Festival. He’s also presented several classes on the topic of Bach Cantatas at Edmonds College’s Creative Retirement Institute.
As a musician, Miguel plays the baroque flute and is a member of several chamber ensembles in the Seattle area, for which he also enjoys transcribing and arranging music.

Joan Hill
Owner, Host, & Director
In 2008, the seed of Artful Journeys was planted in her brain, when Joan brought together all of her life's passions, her love of music, an affinity for the beautiful things in life with an ability to organize events to give birth to Artful Journeys, a program of art education trips for the soul and mind.
Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was very difficult, especially succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
