THE BASICS OF MUSIC THEORY
With Joe Marchio
Fridays, 11 am EDT/8 am PDT
September 11–October 16, 2020
Tour Cost: $10 per session, $50 for the series of 6
What does music notation look like to you? A whirlwind made of heads and legs and squiggles and hashtags? You are not alone, but the ordering of all those symbols is systematic and called music theory. All the music that Joe has presented to us in his past courses and most of the music that you listen to is written according to the properties of music theory: key signatures, notes, chords, timing and rhythm, major and minor scales, intervals, and myriads of notations.
If you are a beginner at reading music or are seeking a refresher course on music theory, this is the perfect class to elicit a melody from you. During this series, Joe will be covering material such as pitches and scales, intervals, clefs, rhythm, form, meter, phrases and cadences, and basic harmony. The end of this series will find you either reading music, writing a simple ditty, or, for the brave souls, composing your first concerto.
Joe Marchio continues his musical zoom series with Music Theory talks, which will help enrich your understanding of the music presented during Joe’s Armchair Journeys series. With this basic musical knowledge, you will find yourself appreciating any composition, wherever you are, whatever your favored genre.
This course is perfect for those who are just beginning to dip their toes into music theory, or for those needing a refresher course. When you finish this course, you should be equipped with the skills to read Western music notation and understand, analyze, and listen with expertise.
Don't worry! By the end of the series you will be able to bring this to life:

Owner, Host, & Director
Years ago, it was suggested to Joan that she might offer an art program, and she jumped at the chance of a lifetime. Bringing together all of her life's passions, the development and administration of Artful Journeys is an exhilarating process for Joan.
Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was very difficult, especially succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
