MUSIC & ARCHITECTURE
IN
NORTHERN ITALY
October 9 - 19, 2023
Trip Status: CLOSED
Tour Cost: $6750, d.o.
Activity Level: Moderate
St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice.
You will arrive in Venice's Marco Polo airport on Monday, October 9, from where we will be transferred to Albergo Cavalletto E Doge, which will be our home while in Venice. (This arrival time means you depart from the USA at the latest on October 8.)
During our first morning there, we will be guided through the important sites and also architecture in the Italian city of canals: Saint Mark’s Square and Church, The Doge’s Palace, Library, Loggetta and more, and then we will explore the more unfrequented alleys and squares to understand how Venice was built and how it works. That 3-hour walk will leave you tired if you are jet-lagged, so after a nice lunch, you can rest a while, before getting gussied up to attend Verdi's I Due Foscari at La Fenice.
During the next morning, Joe will show us how symbiotic the architecture and music of Venice are.
After lunch on October 12, we will transfer to Cremona, where Hotel Duomo will be our home. In Cremona, we will visit the Violin Museum, hear a recital with Strads, and visit a violin workshop.
From Cremona, we'll also train to Brescia for a guided tour of its architecture and history. Brescia offers a rich history which most tourists do not experience.
Then on Sunday, October 15, we will transfer to Milan early, so that we can hear the Gregorian chants sung at the Duomo there. Besides high fashion, Milan has so much to offer: we will get a taste of some of these offerings: The Last Supper, La Scala and various art museums (Brera, Abrosiana, Sforza , Novocento etc.) We could also possibly visit a private art collection, but that is not yet firm.
On Tuesday, October 17, we will visit a very special piano collection in a restore Medici villa where we will be surrounded by wonderful sounds.
The curator of this collection Fernanda Giulini , whose friendship I am humbled to have.
The tour ends on October 19, when we will be carted off to Milan's Malpensa Airport.
Salzburg at night.
Joe Marchio is a graduate of the College of Wooster, where he earned both a Bachelor’s degree in organ performance and a Bachelor of Arts in religious studies. He earned a Master of Divinity degree at the Yale University Institute of Sacred Music, and a Master of Music degree in choral conducting at the Boston Conservatory. Joe became Music Director of the Chatham Chorale in 2010. He is also the Pastor and Director of Music of the First Congregational Church of Chatham.
Joan Hill
Owner, Host, & Director
Years ago, it was suggested to Joan that she might offer an art program, and she jumped at the chance of a lifetime. Bringing together all of her life's passions, the development and administration of Artful Journeys is an exhilarating process for Joan.
Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was very difficult, especially succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
Jessica Edgar
Intern
Jessie grew up on Cape Cod and is very excited to be joining the Artful Journeys team! She studied music and psychology at Columbia University and is currently pursuing a masters in musicology at Oxford University. With interests in choral performance and auditory perception, Jessie combines her interests in performing as a soprano and pianist with her love of academia. She loves the outdoors, learning and traveling.
