Itinerary

This trip will prove to be a respite from the much warmer summer days of the climate-changed world. The first part of the trip will be an aberration from the usual artful journey; its focus will be ships and the ocean, sails, wind and water.

The Tall Ships will sail through the Archipelago of Hvaler into the harbor of Fredrikstad, a town on the southern tip of the Oslo Fjord in Norway. This event will occur on the 15th of July 2023 and the sail-out happens on the 18th of July. Come join all the festivities and view the races. On July 18th, we will join one of the smaller ships in the final sail out. Imagine sailing the fjords amidst those billowing sails mounted on mighty masts of ships of yore!

My cousin Trond, a native of Fredrikstad, will help us navigate through the town. Hege, his wife, a curator at old town Fredrikstad or Gamlebyen, will give us a private tour of that part of town, which harkens back to the mid 1500s. Aided by the expert advice of Renate from Visit Fredrikstad and Knut Hansen, director of Tall Ships Race Fredrikstad 2023, we will experience the relaxed excitement of this special time, as is only possible in Norway.

After our 5 days in Fredrikstad, we will meander up to Oslo, the capital. On the way, we will stop at Ramme to view a private collection of Edvard Munch, one of Norway's greatest painters, known for his expressionistic works such as The Scream. Munch lived on part of this property after gaining some success in the art world.

During our 6-day Oslo stay, we will visit the Opera House, the Astrup Fearnley Museum, Vigeland Park, the new Munch Museum there, and the newly constructed National Museum, which opened in 2022. The nearby Nobel prize museum is also very interesting, as is the Viking museum (if open) and the outdoor Folk Museum. A day of free time will allow you to visit more of Oslo's fine museums and sites.

Further afield, we will travel to Jevnaker where Kistefos has captured the world's attention with The Twist. A bridge, sculpture and gallery combined into one and one of Europe's most original art spaces. Additionally, the Hadeland Glassverk, a whole little village of shops, galleries and cafés built around a glassworks founded all the way back in 1762.

And, we will certainly do our best to find some fine concerts we can attend during Oslo's various summer music festivals.

Joan Hill

In 2008, the seed of Artful Journeys was planted in her brain, when Joan brought together all of her life's passions - her love of music, an affinity for the beautiful things in life, and an ability to organize events - to give birth to Artful Journeys, a program of art education trips for the soul.

Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was difficult, especially
succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
